Alberta is a significant centre of energy production and a pioneer in the development and commercialisation of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). Alberta has a strong tradition as a centre of cleantech expertise, focused on transforming its key energy resources and increasing sustainability.
Alberta is home to commercial projects and demonstrated CCUS technologies backed by years of research and operational experience. CCUS can enable a low-emissions hydrogen industry using Alberta’s vast natural gas reserves. In addition, the Alberta Hydrogen Roadmap (2021) proposes a dramatic increase in the production of hydrogen coupled with CCUS by 2030. Therefore, Alberta is increasingly interesting for Danish commercial interests and is a place of priority, why Clean, GreenHub Denmark, and Danish Industry are organising a delegation to Alberta in cooperation with the Royal Danish Embassy in Canada and the Royal Embassy of Canada in Denmark.

Introduction to CCUS Landscape in Alberta
Alberta is at the forefront of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology, driven by both provincial and federal initiatives. Here are some key points about the CCUS landscape in Alberta:
- Basal Cambrian Sands (BCS): This geological formation is one of the most studied for CO2 sequestration in Alberta. It is a primary target for many of the 25 projects selected under Alberta’s Request for Full Project Proposals.
- Shell Quest Project: One of the largest and most successful CCUS projects globally, the Shell Quest project has been operational since 2015 and has safely stored over 6 million tonnes of CO2.
Incentives and Regulatory Framwork
- Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC): Offers significant incentives for CCUS projects, with credit rates of 60% for Direct Air Capture (DAC) equipment, 50% for non-DAC, and 37.5% for transportation, storage, and usage equipment.
- TIER Program: Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program is a carbon pricing and emissions trading system that provides credits starting at C$65/tonne in 2023, increasing to C$170/tonne by 2030.
Regulatory Support
- Alberta Energy Regulator (AER): The AER has been regulating CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) projects since the 1980s and oversees the regulatory framework for CCUS projects.
- Legislation: CCUS projects in Alberta are governed by existing oil and gas legislation, including the Oil and Gas Conservation Act, Mines and Minerals Act, and Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
Strategic Importance
- Climate Goals: Alberta’s CCUS initiatives are crucial for Canada’s climate plan, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 40-45% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
- Economic Opportunities: The province’s focus on CCUS and hydrogen technologies provides significant opportunities for Danish companies to engage in large-scale projects, export technologies, and form long-term business partnerships.
Price
DKK 5000DKK for two company representatives, be aware that participants are responsible for covering their own flight and hotel expenses.
The price is calculated based on eleven participating companies and a 50-pct. subsidy granted by the Danish Trade Council. Registration is binding. Are you not eligible for export subsidy (de minimis) the base price of participation is DKK 35.600. If the number of participating companies change, we reserve the right to offer participation at a different price. Should this result in a higher price than the one quoted you have the right to cancel your participation.
Registration is in accordance with the General Terms and Conditions for participation in Export Promotion Events of the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI).
